American Foxhound

- Weight:
- 65 - 75 pounds (29 - 34 kg)
- Height:
- 21 - 25 inches (53 - 64 cm)
- Color:
- Any colour
- Temperament:
- The American Foxhound is sweet, kind, loyal, and loving at home. As with all hounds they need careful training, excellent socialization and owners that are willing to give them ample exercise. They are not ideal apartment dogs, and shouldn't be left alone indoors for extended periods of time. A bored foxhound will find ways to keep themselves entertained and can be very destructive. Foxhounds are not nuisance barkers, but they do have loud, deep voices that carry a great distance.
- Grooming:
- The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and shampoo only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder
- Training:
- Although a few foxhounds have been trained in obedience, most will not follow commands unless it suits them. Once a scent is picked up, the foxhound will follow it, neglectful of commands. This is why they should never be trusted off-lead, because their hunting instinct is strong. They are independent by nature
- Exercise:
- They require regular exercise, with routine access to a secure yard the best option. Almost tireless, foxhounds make great walking and jogging partners
- Life Expectancy:
- about 10 - 12 years
- Litter Size:
- average 5 - 7 puppies
- Country of origin:
- United States
