- Temperament:
- The Barbet’s personality is described as companionable, happy, obedient and intelligent. They get on well with other dogs and other pets and usually present no problems in the company of children. They will certainly warn of danger but do not expect further action.
- Grooming:
- The characteristic woolly coat is high maintenance! The coat becomes matted quite easily, especially if the dog goes into water often. For proper coat growth, it is crucial to shave a puppy completely between the ages of four to six months. This ensures the proper coat growth. In fact shaving the dog periodically causes the coat to grow thicker.
- Training:
- The Barbet learns quickly, and is sensitive to the voice of its handler, whom the dog wants to please. It is also important to be consistent during training because the handler who accepts everything and exudes little authority will eventually not be taken seriously by them.
- Exercise:
- These are working dogs by origin which love water and retrieving. Take them for regular long walks during which they get a chance to enjoy themselves off the lead.
