- Temperament:
- Basenjis are not Golden Retrievers. They have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. Many Basenjis are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. Many have strong instincts to chase and seize small fleeing creatures. Basenjis can be very good with children if raised around them, but may not have much patience for them otherwise.
- Grooming:
- The Basenji has no dog smell and, in fact, grooms itself very much like a cat. This breed also sheds little to no hair and often makes a good choice of pet for people prone to allergies.
- Training:
- Basenjis are highly intelligent and learn quickly, but they also have a cat-like independence and "self-motivation" which can make them somewhat casual about obedience.
- Exercise:
- Basenjis are hunters. They require a fairly high amount of activity to keep them out of trouble. An adult may need to run full out for an hour to be happy, while some may require nothing more than a long walk.
