Bloodhound

- Weight:
- Dogs 90-110 pounds (41-50kg) Bitches 80-100 pounds (36-45kg)
- Height:
- Dogs 25-27 inches (63-69cm) Bitches 23-25 inches (58-63cm)
- Color:
- black and tan, liver and tan, or red
- Temperament:
- This breed is a mellow, cheerful, affectionate dog that is nonetheless tireless in slowly and steadily following a scent. Bloodhounds are extremely loyal companions, and if separated from their masters for long periods of time are known to mourn and stop feeding as a sign of distress. Affectionate, gentle, and even-tempered, they make excellent family pets but, like any large breed, may require supervision when around small children because of the possibility of knocking them over with their bulk.
- Grooming:
- The short, dense coat of this breed is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is all that is necessary. Because of its tendency to drool, regular wiping of the face may be necessary. It is important to regularly check the long ears for infection and debris.
- Training:
- Because of its strong tracking instinct, it can be willful, and somewhat difficult to obedience train. However, with the proper amount of time and effort, this can be achieved.
- Exercise:
- This active breed requires quite a bit of exercise. This is a dog that can run for long distances, so it will enjoy long walks or jogs with its owner. It is important to keep this breed on a leash because if it picks up a scent, the dog will wander off.
- Life Expectancy:
- around 10-12 years
- Litter Size:
- average 8-10 puppies
- Country of origin:
- Belgium
