Irish Red and White Setter

- Weight:
- 50-75 pounds (25kg-34kg)
- Height:
- Dogs 24-26 inches (62-66cm.); Bitches 22-24 inches (56-61cm.)
- Color:
- mostly white, with deep red patches
- Temperament:
- The Red and White can take longer to train than other gundogs, but once trained it is a loyal and reliable companion. Like the Irish Setter, the breed has an enthusiastic zest for life, loves to play, and is excellent with children. Irish Red and White Setters thrive best in active families and require room to romp.
- Grooming:
- The Irish Red and White Setter is an average shedder with a soft, flat coat of medium length. This dog should be brushed regularly to prevent tangles, and extra attention is usually required during the shedding seasons. Baths or dry shampoos should be given only when needed.
- Training:
- Work with your Irish Red and White setter very early on in obedience training. It is a high-strung breed and will quickly become unruly if it is not reminded to behave. Learn to challenge your Irish Red and White setter as you train her, by varying the activities you do with her. Irish setters get bored quickly and can be stubborn at times.
- Exercise:
- Daily strenuous exercise is a must for this breed. This can include games and running free in a fenced yard or out in the country. A lack of exercise can result in restlessness and frustration in the Irish setter, and it may be more difficult to train.
- Life Expectancy:
- around 11-15 years
- Litter Size:
- average 7-8 puppies
- Country of origin:
- Ireland
