Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhound Photo
Weight:
90-150 pounds (40-69 kg.)
Height:
28-35 inches (71-90 cm.)
Color:
gray, brindle, red, black, pure white, fawn, or any color that appears in the Deerhound
Temperament:
The Irish wolfhound should be, and usually is, sweet natured and friendly. If socializes from an early age their temperament should be sound and the breed should be good with people and with other dogs. However, they are not always good with other animals and that is something that should be borne in mind. It is important to understand that the Irish wolfhound, like all the Sighthounds, is historically a hunting dog.
Grooming:
A total of 30-40 minutes a week is required, usually 10 minutes at a time, using a stiff brush through the coat. Ears should be checked for dirt and toenails trimmed if necessary.
Training:
Like most Sighthounds, they are not easily motivated for many dog/owner activities (easily distracted by anything that moves). The issue with training an Irish Wolfhound, like all Sighthounds, is not a lack of intelligence or even a desire to please as much as a lack of ability on the part of typical/average trainers, to motivate the dog. This nature makes a reliable recall virtually impossible. Training is strongly recommended, and should start as early as possible. Irish Wolfhounds respond best to encouragement and food rewards.
Exercise:
Mature dogs should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day. At home they will spend most of their day sleeping at your feet.
Life Expectancy:
around 7-8 years
Litter Size:
average 3-6 puppies
Country of origin:
Ireland
