Mastiff

- Weight:
- 80 - 90 kg (175 - 200 lb)
- Height:
- 27 - 32 inches (70 - 80 cm)
- Color:
- apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, fawn, or dark fawn-brindle
- Temperament:
- The Mastiff breed is a combination of grandeur, dignity, and courage; calm and affectionate to its master, but capable of guarding. The breed is innately good natured, calm, easygoing, and surprisingly gentle. It is a well-mannered house pet but needs sufficient room to stretch out. This is an extremely loyal breed and, though not excessively demonstrative, it is devoted to its family and good with children. However, it can be very protective of its owners and must be handled sensibly, since it is exceptionally powerful and can be difficult to control.
- Grooming:
- The short, dense coat of this breed is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing or wipe down with a dry towel or damp wash cloth is all that is necessary.
- Training:
- Because they are destined to be VERY large dogs, basic obedience training should be a part of every Mastiff's upbringing. Adequate socialization is an extremely important part of a puppy's training. An unsocialized dog, of any breed, can become either fearful or aggressive. Teaching should be done using positive reinforcement methods.
- Exercise:
- Daily brisk walks are needed for a Mastiff to stay in shape. It is important that you don’t over exercise your Mastiff under 2 years of age as their large skeleton is still developing and too much exercise can result in injury.
- Life Expectancy:
- around 6-10 years
- Litter Size:
- average 2-5 puppies
- Country of origin:
- England
