Saint Bernard - St. Bernard

- Weight:
- 110-200 pounds (50-91 kg)
- Height:
- Dogs 27-35 inches (70-90cm.); Bitches 25-31 inches (65-80 cm.)
- Color:
- Primary colour white with smaller or larger reddish-brown patches.
- Temperament:
- St. Bernards are very gentle giants. They are often fond of children and are loyal to their family, but, as with any dog, should not be left unsupervised with young children. It is imperative that St. Bernards should also remain very socialized because they can become overly protective of their territory. They are also very prone to anxiety if left alone for long periods of time and may destroy their owner's belongings. They commonly get along very well with other dogs and love high amounts of attention.
- Grooming:
- The breed has two coat types (short and long haired) and both are fairly easy to look after. Daily combing and brushing with a firm bristle brush is all that is necessary.
- Training:
- It is essential, because of their tremendous size as an adult, that you socialize and obedience train this dog from an early age. They are intelligent and therefore learn very quickly. Training should be based on positive reinforcement.
- Exercise:
- The Saint Bernard requires exercise to remain in shape. Puppies, due to their size, should not have too much exercise until their bones are well formed and strong. Until they turn two limit their exercise to short walks and brief play sessions.
- Life Expectancy:
- around 8-10 years
- Litter Size:
- average 8-9 puppies
- Country of origin:
- Switzerland
