Temperament:
Weimaraners are happy, loving, attentive and very rambunctious dogs. They need a regular opportunity to run and play. They are extremely intelligent, but can be very opinionated and willful, therefore a Weimaraner should have firm but gentle training from the start. Its high activity level and size may make it unsuitable for small children. It is alert and wary of strangers, making it an excellent watchdog.
Grooming:
The shorthaired variety needs weekly brushing or wipe down with a dry towel or damp wash cloth. The more unusual longer-haired variety, with a coat of about 5cms, requires more frequent brushing and combing. A check should be made on their ears routinely to ensure they are free from infections.
Training:
This is a breed that definitely needs obedience training to control his rambunctious nature. Have puppy in crate for help in housetraining and to protect furniture and woodwork from puppy teeth when the little rascal cannot be watched. Socialization and control exercises at home are essential for the Weimaraner the moment he enters the family. He must be taught that all members of the family are to be obeyed. Training this breed requires a light touch, as they are sensitive to correction and will shy away from harsh treatment. This breed learns best when observing or copying other dogs.
Exercise:
Like most large hunting breeds, the Weimaraner needs lots of exercise to stay fit. If you don't have a large outdoor area where they can run, be prepared to take them for lots of long walks. Because he was developed as a hunting dog and still maintains those instincts, he may be dangerous to birds and small mammals.
Life Expectancy:
around 10 - 12 years
Litter Size:
average 6 - 8 puppies
Country of origin:
Germany
